Try easygrid.py
(http://www.earthenware-services.org/software/EarthenwareLibrary/EarthenwareLib-0.1.0.zip)
It needs some refinement but could be a step in the right direction.
Maybe you could help hacking it as a starting point.
I had your same problem and I'm using it at the moment, not completely
satified but a good idea anyway (the only I have found till now)
