[pygtk] gtk theme

I am running pygtk(from darwin port) with X11 on a mac.
I am not very familliar with this environment, but so far I am really
happy with it. 
What does it take to have pygtk use a theme. I tried to download some
from art gnome, have them dump into ~/.gnome but it's not working. 
Do I need gnome?(that I will rather not install if possible) There is
a gtk-switch-theme on darwin but for some raison I couldn't install
it. 
I would like to have my test app looking more like mac.
