[pygtk] determining the number of columns of a liststore at runtime

Is that possible? I have tried something like this:

def ncolumns():
    code
    return string

example that code returns: "str, str, str"

then: gtk.ListStore( ncolumns() ). But it throws: "could not get 
typecode from object"
