I'm attaching a version of your code that works perfectly for me.  I'm 
still using older versions of GTK+, PyGTK, and PyGObject, so maybe 
there's a bug somewhere.  Some things have apparently changed since my 
versions so I had to make a few changes to get it to work.  Async on 
win32 works fine, but you have to be very careful.

   GTK+ 2.14.4
   PyGObject 2.14.2
   PyGTK 2.12.1
