ipython -gthread is what you needed to do with older versions of pygtk. With pygtk 2.15.0 or later, both ipython and plain python itself will give you interactive pygtk. You can still use ipython -gthread, but if you have a recent version of pygtk, ipython 0.10 will tell you that you won't need to use -gthread:

mdehoon:~ $ ipython -gthread
Your PyGtk has set_interactive(), so you can use the
more stable single-threaded Gtk mode.
