Are you studying statistics? Or are you interested in statistics and/or the
wide range of applications of statistics?
The 2011 WA Young Statisticians' Workshop gives you a chance to meet other
like-minded uni students, people in the early stages of their career in
statistics and industry leaders. You'll learn about a large number of the
many ways people are applying statistics in WA, and what's been researched
too. The workshop is on Tuesday 27th September, from 8:30am until 5pm at the
Tompkins on Swan Function Centre, Alfred Cove; followed by drinks and
nibbles for at the Melville Bowls Club for interested participants.
The standard workshop fee is $40, but students pay the discounted fee of
$40, this includes your morning and afternoon tea and lunch, as well as a
workshop bag - on top of all of the opportunities to meet and learn from
your peers and industry leaders. If you are willing, you can apply to
present a 12 minute talk or poster on any topic relevant to statistics
(doesn't have to be a difficult topic). The best talk will win a $200 prize
and the best poster at least $50.
Our keynote speakers are Dr Mike Scott, WA Director of the Census at the
ABS; and Professor Ian James, Directorof the Centre for Clinical Immunology
and Biostatistics at Murdoch University. Other invited speakers include Dr
John Henstridge, founder, Managing Director and Principal Consultant
Statistician at Data Analysis Australia, and Adjunct Professor at UWA; and
Professor Stephan Lewandowsky, from the School of Psychology at UWA.
There will also be a Q&A session, where a team of panellists from a wide
range of s will be on hand to answer your questions about issues relevant to
statistics and statisticians, give you insights on life as a postgraduate
student and at various employers of statisticians in WA, and lend advice on
getting into a postgraduate degree and finding the perfect job. Our
panellists so far include:
- Professor Ian James, leading researcher in medical statistics at Murdoch
University
- Dr John Henstridge, founder, Managing Director and Principal Consultant
Statistician at Data Analysis Australia, and Adjunct Professor at UWA
- Dr Brenton Clarke, expert in statistical theory at Murdoch University
