About Young Statisticians
What’s the Young Statisticians all about?
The Young Statisticians’ aim is to provide a forum for networking and the exchange of information for young and early career statisticians from around Australia and to promote the interests of young statisticians to the broader community.
What constitutes a Young Statistician?
A Young Statistician is loosely defined as someone who is studying statistics or has graduated in the last 5 years and is working or studying in a statistics related area (or wants to be). You don’t have to be ‘young’ to a Young Statistician, just someone new or interested in the profession.
What do the Young Statisticians do?
The signature Young Statisticians event is the bi-annual Statistical Society of Australia Young Statisticians Conference. The last conference was held in Canberra for 2 days between 13-14 April 2007 and was attended by 80 young statisticians from every single state and territory of Australia as well as New Zealand. The next conference will be held in 2009 in Sydney. Stay posted for further details.
Additional to the Young Statisticians Conference are events held throughout the year at the state level. These events include dinners, talks, career evenings, workshops, and even camping trips. Such events are a great way to meet new friends and to get information about what’s going on in the wider world of statistics in a non-threatening way.

Their main duties are to organise and coordinate Young Statisticians activities at the national level and to represent the interests of Young Statisticians at meetings of the Central Council of the SSAI.
At the state level, each of the Branches of the Statistical Society of Australia has a Young Statisticians Representative. The representatives are responsible for organising activities at the Branch level during the year. The current representatives are:
Where do Young Statisticians come from?
