WHO ARE THE YOUNG STATISTICIANS?
We are a Section of the Statistical Society of Australia Inc. (SSAI). Our aim is to provide social contact, contacts for discussion and sharing or statistical work, career and academic guidance and also to promote the interests of Young Statisticians.
ARE YOU A YOUNG STATISTICIAN?
A Young Statistician is someone who is studying statistics or has graduated in the last 5 years and is working or studying in a statistics related area (or wants to be). The phrase "young statistician" is used loosely, and is independent of a participant’s age. A young statistician is considered to be a person in their professional statistical career, regardless of age.
HOW TO GET INVOLVED
YS AND SSAI
At the biennial Australian Statistical Conference the EJG Pitman Prize is awarded to the "Young Statistician" presenting the most outstanding talk. The SSAI and other employers may assist student members of the SSAI to attend the Australian Statistical Conference by contributing financially to the student members travel and conference costs. The various branches of the SSAI also provide support for Young Statisticians. This support is not only financial, but involves professional and personal development through networking and mentoring. There are many opportunities available to a graduate in statistics. Employers of statisticians range from the obvious Australian Bureau of Statistics to the more obscure such as pharmaceutical companies. Salaries (the important part!!!) also vary depending on the industry and responsibilities and qualifications of the employee. Here we have outlined a few of the many industries statisticians are empoyed in.
