TACKLES

LUFF TACKLE or WATCH TACKLE

A double and a single hook block. If the top block is a rope tail block that can be clapped onto another rope with a rolling hitch then it is called a Handy Billy or Jigger.

Rigged to advantage or disadvantage?

The tackle above is rigged to disadvantage. This means that the hauling end of the rope is being pulled through the stationary block. If the tackle was to be rigged to advantage, the hauling end of the rope would be pulled through the moving block.

ROPE + CABLE

Rope is measured using diametre in millimetres. The strength or breaking strain of the rope is the amount of weight the rope can support before breaking.

3 strand rope comes with two different lays: s lay and z lay. z lay is much more common.

BREAKING STRAIN & SAFE WORKING LOAD OF MANILLA ROPE

To find the breaking strain of manilla rope you simply square the diameter.

The safe working load (SWL) of rope is 1/10 of the breaking strain.

For example:

The breaking strain of a 10mm piece of manilla rope would be 100kg. Multiply the breaking strain by 1/10th and that gives you a SWL of 10kg.

CABLE

Cable is measure by the number of strands by the number of wires. For example the piece of cable on the right would be 7 strands by 7 wires: 7x7
