ROWING ORDERS FOR DOUBLE BANKED BOATS
SIGHT OARS: Crew sit on thwarts facing aft. Ship crutches and select oar. Oar blades should be facing forward.
STANDBY TO TOSS OARS: Cautionary order to prepare crew.
OARS UP: Crew raise oars with looms in hand and rest grips on floorboards. Oars should be vertical blade facing for and aft.
OARS DOWN: Oars are lowered into crutches and blades feathered.
STAND BY TO GIVE WAY: Cautionary order. Crew lean forward with arms out-stretched. Blade of oar should be just above the water.
GIVE WAY TOGETHER: All crew lower blades into water and commence rowing.
EASY OARS: Crew stop rowing and hold their oar feathered and parallel to the water.
REST OARS: Crew slide oar over gunwhale and rest the grip on opposite gunwhale.
HOLD WATER: Crew stop rowing and hold oars in water.
BACK WATER: Crew push the oars through the water instead of pulling.
TRAIL OARS: Crew swing the looms of their oars out towards the bow so the blades become parallel to and close to the boat’s side. Use in emergency situations when too close to a jetty or other obstruction.
BOWS: Bow pair toss and boat their oars to make them available for other duties such as coming alongside.
BOAT OARS: Crew lay oars in boat, blades facing forward
