Conferring Statisticians 2025 Edition

This week DAA consultants attended the Australian Statistical Conference 2025 at Curtin University organized by the Statistical Society of Australia (SSA). The team brought home many takeaways from a range of diverse and interesting speakers and sessions.

Dr John Henstridge spoke at the Statistical Consulting Network session on Day 1, and Trent Piccicacco chaired the Early Career and Student Statistician Network Panel about the SSA’s mentoring program on Day 1 and the Environment and Ecology session on Day 3.

Dr John Henstridge chaired the inaugural Henstridge Praeger Lecture, a lecture promoting the Henstridge Praeger Honors Scholarships and good applications of statistics in the community. Dennis Trewin spoke at the lecture where he shared his wisdom in a talk titled: “Trust in Statistics is crucial for the wellbeing of societies but it has to be earned”. Dennis’ affirmed the need for Statisticians involvement in all parts of government decision making, especially in further iterations of the National AI Plan.

At the conference’s closing ceremony, John was awarded an Honorary Life Membership for the SSA, a massive achievement and very representative of his hard work and dedication to the society and statistics in general for over 50 years. Well done, John!
